The northeastern part of the Kédougou region is the most affected, particularly the Saraya department. This situation is largely due to the overflowing of the Falémé River and several backwaters. These rivers, the main tributaries of the Senegal River, leave their banks after intense rains, causing flooding, as evidenced by the events of 2024. Flooding in Saraya is also aggravated by water erosion, as demonstrated by the mechanisms described in the study by Boissy et al. (2022). Intense and prolonged rainfall leads to erosion of soils already weakened by a low-permeability geological substrate and rugged terrain. In addition, human activities (agriculture, gold mining) disrupt soil stability. These factors, coupled with steep slopes (up to 61.57%), concentrate the flow towards low-lying areas, creating conditions conducive to flooding. EPSG:3857
