In Kédougou, the risk of extreme heat is exacerbated by the interaction between increasing climate hazards and marked socioeconomic vulnerability. On the one hand, meteorological records (ANACIM, 2021) show that during the dry season, temperature peaks regularly exceeding 40°C occur, in line with regional warming trends (IPCC, 2021). On the other hand, local vulnerability is amplified by precarious socioeconomic and physical conditions. Furthermore, the study by Faye et al. (2021) conducted in Bandafassi, a commune of Kédougou, demonstrates that exposure to heat waves, defined here by the 90th percentile of minimum and maximum temperatures over three consecutive days, leads to a significant increase in daily mortality, particularly among women and people over 55 years of age. These results clearly illustrate that the overall risk linked to extreme heat in Kédougou does not only lie in the increase in temperatures, but also in the high vulnerability of local populations, thus justifying the urgent implementation of integrated adaptation strategies.
